Here’s to you Theresa May!

The view of an English paraplegic in France

2nd December 2018.  My reply to Mrs. May’s letter to the nation – and other stuff

Wasn’t it nice of Theresa May to write to us all expressing her heartfelt desire that we join with her and support her vision of Brexit?  Silly woman!  I had to take the opportunity to reply and have e-mailed her, below:

Prime Minister

I write in response to your letter to the Nation.

You ask me to support the deal for the good of the nation, to take advantage of this opportunity for ‘renewal and reconciliation’ and to ‘come together again as one people’.  You seem to fail to recognise that all the reasons why the nation is as divided as it is now are as a direct result of the Conservative Party and its policies whilst in government.

Years of austerity have devastated vast parts of the country, austerity policies introduced by the Tories.  The catastrophe that is Universal Credit has done the same, as witnessed by the ever growing demand on, and continued growth of food banks.  Similarly so have the policies introduced by the Tory government and enforced by the Home Office, who seem to have taken your ‘hostile environment’ position to heart – yes Prime Minister your watchword when Home Secretary.  If the attitude of the Home Office to immigration isn’t racist then it can only be a footstep away from crossing that line.  The actions towards the Windrush Generation would indicate such.  The pressure on the NHS, Mental Health and Social Services have showed me at first hand the reliance of the NHS on EU workers are also pressures as a direct consequence of Tory austerity policies.

Do you really expect me to believe anything you say?

I am unable to support you for a number of reasons more fundamental to me and my understanding of what being English and a part of the United Kingdom actually means.  We are a proud democracy, living as a society within the rule of law and living amongst nations following the rule of international law.

You continue to tell us how you are honouring the will of the people as expressed in the referendum but by accepting Brexit and the deal you so proudly offer us you are asking the people of the UK to believe:

  • That it is OK for MP’s to deliberately lie to the electorate to further their own interests, financial, political or personal. It isn’t and I refuse to accept that.
  • That it is OK for foreign agents, be they individuals, data giants or governments, to interfere with the due process of the UK’s electoral system. It isn’t and I refuse to accept that.
  • That it is OK for businessmen to knowingly break UK law with regard to the funding of referenda in the UK. It isn’t and I refuse to accept that.
  • That it is OK for MP’s to associate themselves with people who knowingly break UK law. It isn’t and I refuse to accept that.

Do you really believe that any of the points above, all proven to be the case, are good for the country?  If so then shame on you and your morally bankrupt political party.

Brexit was a monumental mistake taken by a deliberately manipulated electorate.  Your attempt to find a way through that disaster was doomed from the start and for you to ask me to support you now is as outrageous as you bending to the will of the traitorous, treacherous extreme Brexiteers within the Conservative Party.

Yours

Jeremy Brookes

Mrs. May can be reached at mayt@parliament.uk or via the 10 Downing Street web form   – but this only gives you 1000 characters.

Whether you agree with Brexit or not it has become as clear as day that voters were manipulated by liars, law-breakers and foreign agents, be they governments, nationals or global businesses.  How can that be right?  How can ‘taking back control’ and then handing that control to liars, Russia, Facebook or Aaron Bank’s shady businesses be in the UK’s best interest?  It’s time for a second referendum, wrapped up in all the safeguards necessary like Harold Wilson’s referendum for us to remain in the EEC back in 1975 – my very first vote as it happens – and I voted YES to stay in, so no change there then.  If the will of the people is to prevail then it needs to be based on truth.

Some good news with regard to the Mercedes’ French registration – it’s now got French number plates on it J.  It was a long time coming but we got there in the end and our Sprinter now proudly wears it’s new number FB-586-TN.  It took nearly as long to get the windscreen changed – well not really but it did take almost four weeks!  Can you believe that they didn’t have one in stock?  How many Sprinters are there in France, never mind Europe??  Not to worry, it’s done now so all’s well.

We are now waiting for our Titre de Sejour cards to get delivered.  We’ve had to renew our first cards as they were only valid for a year, so off we went to Gueret to renew them.  We came away with an official receipt and the new cards, valid for five years, have now been delivered to our Mayor, soon to be dropped off or collected when he’s done his paperwork.  I’m in a race to get Karen and myself as ‘officially’ in France as possible so that if the worst does come to the worst we’ll have a better than evens chance of staying in France.

We had our French friends Francoise and Michel over from Nantes last week.  They’ve been friends of Karen’s since 1988 and have been especially supportive since my accident.  They were here waiting for us when we first came out after my dice with death in 2016 and have been regular visitors since.  Two nicer people you couldn’t hope to meet.  We had a great five days with them, which involved lots of eating, good red wine, champagne and the occasional drop of single malt whisky.

Unfortunately their visit coincided with a major bacterial infection in my plumbing, still not sorted out as I type.  I did a wee test and the nurse sent it off to the local laboratory in Aubusson.  The results came back two days later, complete with the antibiotics recommended to clear up the infection identified.  I’m on Norfloxacin.   Two tablets a day for six days were prescribed and time was up last night.   Not to put too fine a point on it my wee is still far from clear so I think I need some more – but let’s see what the morning brings and then it will be a quick call to Dr. Chanson for some advice.  Water infections are a real misery – it means more frequent catheters to try to prevent ‘accidents’ in that department, fevers and achy joints and because of what is involved when using catheters these infections will be an ongoing battle – so not too much to look forward to there then!

This instalment of my blog will have to end here I’m afraid – tomorrow, 3rd December 2018, is the third anniversary of my accident, the third anniversary of the start of my new life stuck in a wheelchair  (although it hardly qualifies as any kind of a life!).  I’ve been struggling under a black cloud all day and it is guaranteed to get darker as the day rolls into tomorrow and the misery that will bring.

I’ve got one great thing to look forward to though – my daughter Amy and her partner Andy are coming over in a few days so I’ll get to have big hugs and loves with Milly and Violet, two of my beautiful Grandchildren.  That will brighten things up no end – especially as it will be the first time Karen and I will get to meet Violet.  We can’t wait.

Love to all and speak soon.  Jem.
